Discovering beauty again.

Lake Louise, Alberta 2023

Katie and I traveled to beautiful Lake Louise last week. I have visited Lake Louise several times and each time I visit, I find something new to marvel at.

The first time I went to Lake Louise I was eleven years old. My family traveled across Canada to British Columbia for a family wedding. We camped in Banff National Park and visited the surrounding areas. In the early 1990s, we lived in Calgary, Alberta. Our daughter Katie was born in Calgary. Being young and adventurous, we took our baby daughter camping to Tunnel Mountain in Banff National Park. We camped with our friend Bonne. I can clearly remember the first night, it was ridiculously cold. Daytime temperatures were in the high 20s, and nighttime temps in the mountains dipped to 10 below. We had a camping heater in the tent. We managed to camp for one full night. The next night we stayed in a cabin in Canmore, Alberta.

We took Katie to the Rockies any chance we could get. We created many great memories with our daughter when we lived in Alberta. Our family has a passion for the outdoors and the Canadian Rockies are an outdoor playground for enthusiasts.

Late last week, I had the opportunity to visit Lake Louise with my daughter again. Now 30 years later, we created new memories together.

Lake Louise, Alberta 2023

She is expecting her first baby at the end of August. She was able to hike the flat trail along the edge of the lake. We stopped half way for a break so she could dip her feet in the ice cold water. She enjoyed the refreshing dip on a hot summer day. She sat in the shade relaxing and taking in the beautiful views of the lake.

Katie at Lake Louise 2023

I soon realized this was my opportunity to capture photos I had in my mind. I knew I didn’t have a lot of time because Katie would probably get too hot. I quickly climbed the hill along the edge of the water and disappeared into the forest. This is where my adventure starts. As I lay on the ground looking through the trees, I saw visitors glance up at me. The location was optimal because I had a perfect view of the lake and mountains away from the busy tourists. As a photographer, you always ask yourself, “How far am I willing to go to get the perfect shot?” Below are my commercial photography shots.

The forest provided a refuge of calmness needed to achieve the perfect shots. Sometimes, I can find myself flustered when I take photos in public surrounded by people talking and looking at what I'm doing. Instead, I was able to focus on technical aspects of the camera and lens to achieve the images I had in mind.

My goal is to capture artistic or abstract photos of Lake Louise. I created a new body of work reminiscent of the Group of Seven paintings. I am satisfied with the final photos and I am excited to include them in a future exhibition. More to come...
